QuantWare raises €20M to scale Quantum Computing

2 min read

QuantWare, a leading quantum computing company developing technology to power the world’s most advanced quantum processors, has secured a €20 million Series A funding round. The round was co-led by Invest-NL Deep Tech Fund and Innovation Quarter, with participation from EIC Fund, existing investors such as FORWARD.one, Graduate Entrepreneur Fund, and QDNL Participations, as well as Job van der Voort, founder and CEO of Remote.

Scaling Quantum Computing with VIO

At the heart of QuantWare’s innovation is VIO, a breakthrough technology designed to overcome the scaling bottlenecks that currently limit quantum processor sizes. VIO enables users to scale any qubit design, paving the way for quantum processors with more than one million qubits on a single chip.

Without VIO, quantum processors remain constrained in qubit numbers, forcing computer builders to connect multiple smaller systems via network links. However, these links introduce noise, reducing computational power exponentially. While quantum computers from industry giants like Google and IBM currently operate with between 100 and 1,000 qubits, QuantWare’s VIO technology offers a clear path toward significantly more powerful quantum systems.

With state-of-the-art fabrication capabilities, QuantWare delivers VIO-powered QPUs while also making the technology accessible to third-party customers through its Foundry and Packaging Services. The company already supplies quantum processors to customers across 20 countries worldwide.

Funding to Expand Fabrication Capabilities

The fresh investment will be used to further develop VIO and expand QuantWare’s chip fabrication facilities. This expansion will enable the company to create much larger quantum processors and meet the growing global demand for its technology.

“Our mission is to make VIO the industry standard for scaling quantum processors and to power the first million-qubit quantum computers for the hyperscalers of tomorrow,” said Matthijs Rijlaarsdam, CEO and co-founder of QuantWare. “Building such systems will revolutionize computing, and we are assembling the best team in the world to achieve this vision.”

Introducing Contralto-A

Last week, QuantWare launched pre-orders for Contralto-A, a quantum processing unit (QPU) designed for error correction. The announcement follows Google’s unveiling of its ‘Willow’ error-correcting quantum chip, which has driven a surge in demand from customers pursuing a competitive roadmap toward large-scale quantum error correction.

Contralto-A is a crucial step in this journey and is built to be easily upgradable to QuantWare’s larger VIO-powered QPUs. Notably, it is nearly twice the size of commercially available competing solutions, reinforcing QuantWare’s leadership in the quantum computing landscape.

With its groundbreaking technologies and strategic funding, QuantWare is accelerating the path toward practical and scalable quantum computing, bringing the industry closer to a future where million-qubit quantum processors become a reality.
